The IJMS's Editorial Team is formed by the Executive Committee of IJMS, the Editorial Board, and the Editors which is formed by Associate Editors and Student Editors. The IJMS has also Ancillary Positions necessary to keep the Journal functioning.
They are responsible for the leadership and supervision of the Journal and its activities. Together with the Associate Editors, they make a decision about each submission and present them to the Editorial Board.

Junior Student Editors are outstanding medical students and recent graduates from around the world who have demonstrated leadership and a strong interest in research and scientific publishing. Although they do not yet have publications indexed in the National Library of Medicine (PubMed), they have completed the required training through the Web of Science Academy courses, including Introduction to Peer Review, Reviewing in the Sciences, Good Citation Behavior, and Co-reviewing with a Mentor. They have also completed ethics training through the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE). Junior Student Editors support the editorial process under the guidance of Full Student Editors and Associate Editors, helping ensure a rigorous and ethical peer-review process while continuing to develop their skills as future researchers and editors.

The International Journal of Medical Students (IJMS) was founded by a group of pioneering medical students who envisioned a global platform for student-led scientific publishing. Since then, IJMS has become the longest-standing, continuously publishing, peer-reviewed journal for medical students in the world.
Since its founding, IJMS has had only three Editors-in-Chief, each serving multi-year terms that ensured continuity, mentorship, and long-term vision:
